Troubleshoot the symptom without bypassing the protection that may be saving the machine.
This triage framework separates safe external checks from electrical, transducer and control work that requires qualified service and revision-specific documentation.
Remove the UF2 from service immediately when these conditions appear
- Damaged cord, plug, connector or external power supply.
- Burning odor, smoke, abnormal heat, arcing or repeated protective-device trips.
- Water inside electrical areas or leaking from an unknown internal source.
- Cracked enclosure, damaged fan guard, unsecured components or field wiring changes.
- Evidence that the level sensor or another protective control was bypassed.
- Severe corrosion, biological growth or unknown liquid residue in the chamber.
Safe external checks before escalation
| Symptom | External checks | Escalation trigger |
|---|---|---|
| No power / no fan | Verify facility outlet, disconnect condition, cord, external supply label, connectors and the correct control position. | Do not open the power supply or enclosure unless qualified and authorized. |
| Fan runs but no fog | Confirm approved water and fill level; allow the level sensor to reset only per instructions; inspect for obvious chamber contamination. | Suspect transducer module, level sensor, supply output or internal wiring. |
| Weak or uneven fog | Check water level, water quality, hose restrictions, fan setting, ambient conditions and whether the hose is carrying pooled water. | Persistent low output may indicate aged or failed transducers, fan degradation or electrical problems. |
| Intermittent fog | Observe whether output changes with water level, vibration, cable movement or fan selection. | Intermittency tied to connectors, controls or level sensing requires service. |
| Water leak | Power down, disconnect, contain water and inspect the visible fill port, drain plug, hose connection and chamber exterior. | Unknown internal leaks or damaged seals require disassembly by qualified service. |
| Fog is hard to see | Improve lighting/background, reduce hose restriction, confirm output and evaluate room velocity, temperature and humidity. | The study may require a higher-output current system rather than more aggressive UF2 operation. |
| Fog disturbs the airflow | Use the lower fan setting, shorten/reconfigure delivery and avoid forcing output through restrictive adapters. | If the required visibility cannot be achieved without excessive discharge influence, change the technology or protocol. |
Fan-only operation may assist drying—but confirm the control state
Legacy notes state that the fan can run with the reservoir empty to aid drying after drainage. That does not authorize dry transducer operation. Confirm that the ultrasonic module remains de-energized and follow the exact control sequence for the unit.
Do not ask a technician to diagnose “it does not fog”
Send the model/revision, serial, power-supply label, photographs, approved water, fill level, fan behavior, indicator status, symptom timing, recent maintenance and a short video. That evidence sharply reduces false parts recommendations.
Practical answers
Can I bypass the water-level sensor to see whether the transducers work?
No. Bypassing a protective control can damage the transducers and create electrical or water hazards. Diagnose the sensor and power path with appropriate documentation and qualified service.
Can I clean the chamber with a descaler or disinfectant?
Not unless the exact UF2 instructions and site procedure approve it. Chemical residue can affect transducers, fog purity and the clean environment.
Does low fog automatically mean failed transducers?
No. Water level, water quality, fan performance, hose restriction, pooled water, ambient conditions and power-supply output can produce similar symptoms.
Define the application before choosing the replacement.
Applied Physics can compare the UF2 condition, room or enclosure, desired visible distance, runtime, water requirements, hose configuration and validation objective before recommending a current ultrasonic or LN₂ platform.
